DARWIN, Jan 7 AAP - A man has been charged with attempted murder after he threw petrol over his girlfriend and tried to set her on fire with a lighter.

A 25-year-old man had an argument with his de facto partner in Katherine between 2pm and 3pm (CST) on Tuesday, police said.

It is alleged he had packed his bags and left the house but returned to the front door and hurled a jerry can of petrol over the 23-year-old woman.

The man allegedly then pulled out a lighter and tried to ignite her but she fled to a friend's home.

Fire damaged the front door and porch, but the flames were extinguished before emergency services arrived.

The man left the home but later handed himself into police.

Police have charged the man with attempted murder and remanded him in custody to appear in the Katherine Court today.
